Fresh from the North Sea...
Cromer Crab is back in season and we love it. It is said that Cromer crabs taste sweeter due to the chalk shelf just off the coast which influences what their diet. We buy crab and lobster from Jonas Seafood, a family-run Cromer business who still fish daily throughout the season from their own boats in the traditional way. Kevin Jonas started the business more than 20 years ago, following in the footsteps of his father, Tom who served on the Cromer Lifeboat with Henry Blogg, the most famous lifeboatman in Norfolk’s history. It is thought that fishing for crab at Cromer dates back to the early 1700s and by the late 1800s the population of Cromer was about 1,400 of whom 120 were fishermen, using the traditional double-ended broad-beamed boats powered by sail or oars and fishing for crab, lobster, whelks, herrings, cod, plaice, skate, plaice and shrimp.
